| How to lay your carpet successfully. |
Laying carpet roll |
|
|
Material needed
Prepare
- A Stanley knife with a strong blade (always work with new blades)
- Double sided tape or glue for surfaces exceeding 20m2
- Scissors
- A tape measure
- A chalk
- A metal ruler
- An araseur trimmer: this will give you a clean and angled cut (change the blade regularly for a neat finish)
|

|
Calculating the surface
Multiply the maximum length (L) of the room by the maximum width (W) to obtain the number of m2 required. L x W = m2. Take into account any deviations: pillars, cupboards, recesses, doorways or French windows. Anticipate 10% more to take off cuts into account.

Laying
Ensure that the floor is clean, dry, flat and not slippery. Take up old flooring if necessary.
Unroll your carpet in the room, letting it ride up the skirting boards by 5 to 10 cm. Let the carpet breathe for 24 hours. During laying the temperature should be above 18°C.

Loose laid
Feasible for rooms less than 12m2 and low traffic areas.
- Unroll the carpet as described above
- Cut the carpet along the skirting board with the araseur trimmer. This will give you a clean and angled cut (change the blade regularly for a neat finish)
- Fix your door thresholds in passage and doorways.

Laying with double sided tape
- Before rolling our the carpet, lay double sided tape in a crisscross grid spaced at 1m intervals and around the edge of the room, leaving the protective covering on the face side of the tape.
- Unroll your carpet as previously explained
- Fold back half the carpet and take the protection off the double sided tape on this half. Roll the carpet back onto the floor and smooth out to the skirting boards with your hand.
- Repeat for the second half of the carpet
- Cut the carpet along the skirting board with the araseur trimmer. This will give you a clean and angled cut (change the blade regularly for a neat finish)
- Fix your door thresholds in passage and doorways.

More tips
How to make invisible seams:
- Lay the two rolls with a 10cm overlap.
- Fold back the first roll by 2/3, glue and replace.
- Repeat with second roll and smooth the two pieces towards the skirting boards.
- With a ruler and a Stanley knife, cut the overlap an remove the off cuts.
- Glue and smooth towards centre. Press out any air pockets or tautness caused by laying. Start in the middle and finish with the edges.

Pipes and doors
- Push the carpet against the pipe. Make a vertical cut at mid-height of the pipe. Fold back the carpet. Make small cuts around the pipe.
- Make small v-shaped cuts on both sides of the carpet in the angle between the carpet and the wall. Fold the carpet behind the pipe. Fold to the front and slice from one cut to the other.
- Push the carpet hard against the door frame and the floor. Start from the door frame and make two 45° cuts. Cut towards yourself. Then smooth well.
