History
• 1880

SOMMER, an authentic success story which starts with Alfred SOMMER in 1880.

• 1925 : LE BALATUM
Creation of BALATUM by Balatum S.A., specialised in the manufacture and sale of wallpaper and low-cost floors.
• 1965
Merger with Balamundi Production, manufacturer of tufted carpets.
With the arrival of new technology and powerful competitors, the board decide to create new PVC and textile floor coverings therefore a workshop to manufacture tufted carpets is set up in Baisieux before being transferred to the BALAMO factory near Tournai.

Fortunately for Baisieux, the board decide to launch a new textile fibre carpet: the needlepuched carpet, already developed in the SOMMER factory in Sedan. Thanks to this the Baisieux factory remains operational after the end of BALATUM.
• 1968
The company becomes Balamundi France, a group with 17 manufacturing plants located in a dozen countries throughout the world.
• 1976
Bought back by the group SOMMER ALLIBERT, in 1980 the company becomes an "International flooring company".
• 1997
The group Sommer Allibert takes over the manufacture of floor coverings for Tarkett and the two groups are merged , creating Tarkett SOMMER SAS which then becomes Tarkett SAS in 2003.
• In 2004

Wishing to concentrate solely on its core activity - hard flooring - Tarkett sells its needlepunching business to the De Saedeleir Group, a specialist in non woven industrial fibres. SOMMER Needlepunch®, a brand which respects the tradition of quality and professionalism of SOMMER continues to offer more design, more innovation, better service and better proximity.
